Focus Greentech Workshop on High-efficient Heat Pumps Held


A Focus Greentech workshop titled “High-efficient heat pumps-the future of renewable energy source ” was held on 29 January at econet china in Shanghai.

Dr. Prof. Zhang Xu, Director of Department of HVAC and Thermal Engineering of Tongji University, Member of Chinese Association of Refrigeration, shared with the audience his rich research and industrial application experiences in heat pumps industry in China. “With the rapid increase of urbanization and building areas of China, it brings good opportunities for Chillers-Air Conditioning system, including heat pumps in recent 15 years,” asserted Prof. Zhang.

Heat pumps work like refrigerators, only much greener. Heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide equivalent heat/cool at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating conventional heating or cooling appliances. Heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces, boilers, chillers and air conditioners.

Air source, ground source and sewage source heat pumps are widely applied in China in office, hotels, public buildings, particularly the ground source heat pumps. Quite a few most existing applications can be found in China, such as the large scale ground sourced camlock coupling in Shanghai, which is the largest ground sourced heat pump system in the world, according to Zhang. Innovations on multi-temperature heat pump for THIC (temperature and humidity independent control) in Air Condition System, absorption heat pump to power plant for deat recovery of condensing, transcritical Cycle CO2 heat pump for hot water supply, heat pump based multi-energy source, are also the frontiers of heat pump development in China.

Dürr from Germany as the second speaker shared their experiences on high-efficient CO2 heat pumps. “The heat pump manufactured by Dürr has several unique features. Using the environmentally friendly, natural refrigerant CO2, which does not contribute to the greenhouse effect or the depletion of the ozone layer and a transcritical process control, the heat pump can achieve very high temperatures, which can reach up to 110°C in perfect conditions”, stated Mr. Philipp Hübner, Senior Product Manager from Dürr.  As a heat source, it can either recover heat from low temperature waste heat sources (such as cooling water, waste water, sewage water)or use ambient air to provide the process heat. In a heat-cold-coupling setup, it can provide cooling of up to -10°C simultaneously, which is perfect for large-scale industrial and commercial cases, in which there is a demand for cooling and heating. Dürr’s product portfolio covers German TÜV-certified single-stage machines with a heating capacity of 50 to 1000kW and a cooling capacity of 40 to 700kW.
