econet partner meeting & Sino-German Dialogue on Urban Regeneration at UDG Shanghai

2016-12-13

On December 9th, the partner meeting firstly offered a review session of the activities over the year after the welcome address given by Dr.Nils Seibert, Deputy General Manager of GIC Shanghai. econet partners provided feedbacks on their participation in joint activities, including the econet salons, EU Switch Asia  Susbuild project, Bau Congress China in Beijing, German Homestyle fair in Nanjing etc. Ms. LU Wei from econet china also presented strategic planning for activities in 2017. Meanwhile, the partner companies also gave constructive suggestions on the integration of existing resources among partners, strengthening marketing through social media channels and collaborations in project acquisition.

Following the partner meeting, a Sino-German Dialogue on Urban Regeneration was organized by econet at UDG Design Valley. Mr. Nino Ling, President of OUR (Office for Urban Renewal) and assistant president of the UDG Group, was invited to share case studies of retrofitting projects Hermes Flagship Store Shanghai and Xu Jiahui Church. Since 2010, UDG founded the Office for Urban Renewal (OUR), started the research work on urban heritage protection and renewal, the existing building. Over the past 6 years, OUR has developed into a professional design, consulting and research team focusing on the protection and renewal of urban heritage and the re-use of existing buildings. It is committed to providing the whole process of urban renewal and historical building protection and renewal in China.

Mr. Ling also introduced the "U+ Platform", which has been initiated by UDG as an international platform to support foreign architects & designers in China for project acquisition and facilitate the collaborations with local design institutes. The platform will be officially launched on December 28th, 2016.

Econet partners Rhinescheme & RSAA also shared their insights from architect perspective on China’s urban renewal progress by interpreting their own projects.  Li Ran, General Manager of Rhinescheme, introduced a few best practices of industrial transformation, including revitalization of former industrial area Karlswerk in Germany, Nanjing Hutchison Factory redevelopment to a mix use of city complex and new Harbor Dockyards in Tianjin. Rhinescheme has recently won the project of re-developing Baosteel Wesocool industry area in Shanghai.

Zhuang Ziyu,
Partner & Principal Architect of RSAA, shared redesign of their Siheyuan office and Liu Bai Ben Shopping Center in the Beijing inner city. The statement RSAA is making with its new office at gulou area is a transformation instead of a replacement of the historical substance of the city, a conscious manipulation of the culture fabric. The traditional Siheyuan consisting of a courtyard surrounded by 4 individual buildings was turned into an office space by inserting a glass box into its center, connecting three of the four buildings into meeting room, office space and library. The separate building serves as the model making workshop and also features a kitchen. The glass box is creatively functioned as a rooftop terrace which provides an unobstructed view towards both Drum and Bell Tower.

After the dialogue event, econet partners had a guided tour at UDG International Design Valley. The project itself is a successful practice of urban renewal accomplished by UDG Shanghai team end of 2015, transformed from an abandoned government owned hotel into a creative design park to meet the increasing city vitality. It’s now also become the headquarter of UDG Shanghai.

econet partners took this opportunity to meet and exchange with UDG architects on respective strategic activities, create synergies and facilitate potential project collaborations. This meets econet’s vision of creating the initiative as an information, networking and marketing platform, connecting German green solutions providers with Chinese stakeholders.

Thanks to our active and supportive partners, econet china has been steadily growing over the past
years and has built up a strong consortium of green solutions providers along the value chain of sustainable urban development and green building. We wish to strengthen the joint efforts with more interested industry partners for promoting the Sino-German cooperation in smart urbanization, energy efficiency and sustainable development in the future.
